Can I work while I apply for SSDI?
Yes, but only if your earnings stay under Social Security's substantial gainful activity level. In 2026 that is $1,690 a month, or $2,830 if you are blind under its rules. If you earn more, Social Security generally will not find you disabled. After you are on SSDI, different work rules apply, including a trial work period.

Working a little while a claim is pending is not automatically a denial. Earning above Social Security's line usually is.
The line while you apply
The first question in the disability decision is whether you are working. The eligibility page says that if you are working in 2026 and your earnings average more than $1,690 a month, or $2,830 if you are blind, you generally cannot be considered to have a disability. That line is called substantial gainful activity, or SGA.
The Who can get Disability page uses the same 2026 figures. Self-employment has its own SGA tests. If you are not working, or you are working under the line, the file goes to Disability Determination Services for the medical steps.
Report the work. Hiding a job is a reason a later decision goes badly.
After you are on SSDI
Different rules apply once you are already receiving SSDI. Social Security lets you test work during a trial work period. In 2026, a month counts toward that trial if you earn more than $1,210 before taxes, or if you work more than 80 hours in self-employment. You can have nine of those months inside a rolling five-year window and still receive the full SSDI payment, as long as you report the work and still meet the medical rules.
After those nine months, a 36-month extended period of eligibility uses the SGA amounts ($1,690, or $2,830 if you are blind). Earn over the line in a month and that month's SSDI payment generally stops. The work page is the current version of those steps.
Those work incentives are for people already on SSDI. They do not raise the SGA line while you are still waiting on a first decision.
SSI is stricter on income
SSI looks at income and resources every month, not only at SGA. A job that stays under the SSDI line can still reduce or stop SSI. If you receive both, read both sets of rules. SSDI versus SSI is the side-by-side.
The 2026 amounts, including the SSI federal payment, are collected in the COLA update.
What to do with a part-time job
If you are still deciding whether to file, what to do when you need to file is the place to start. If you are already working, write down monthly gross pay before you talk to anyone. A representative can only work with numbers you actually have.

Ask about the first filing
A disability representative who serves your area may call about the claim. The call does not file anything or hire them.
